Susan Sellers — 2x4

Describe the Ideal Candidate in three words SMART / VISUAL / INDEPENDENT

What’s the most common mistake people make when they apply for jobs? Telling too much about themselves in a cover letter rather than demonstrating strengths and qualities in work.

What’s the best question anyone has asked you in an interview? I can’t recall. I've never really had a stumper. In general, people ask very few questions which is a problem.

How important is it for you to see personal work? Though I have to say, I rarely see personal work I like, I think it is critical. The crossover between personal and professional work demonstrates the breadth and depth of someone's methodology. In the best cases, personal work is professional work.

What’s worse — over or underselling yourself? To me, always overselling.

Do you ever really keep applications on file? Yes.

Founded in 1994 by Michael Rock, Susan Sellers and Georgianna Stout, 2x4 is headquartered in New York City and consists of approximately 24 people. The focus of our work is brand strategy: we articulate core values and develop the creative ideas that express them. Both highly rational and wildly visual, our work spans strategy and design from culture to commerce. For more than 15 years we have been working to redefine the role of the designer in translating business strategy into tangible and designed experiences. We work with some of the most design-savvy clients worldwide to develop strategy, design systems, content and projects that draw on both modernist traditions and the exuberance of contemporary life.
